Self-harm or self-relief? Who can unravel the mystery of whom and why people cut?

Conducting Talk Show interviews on this topic is author/expert Nancy Alcorn (“Cut: Mercy for Self Harm”/ Winepress Publishing, Aug. 2007), who shares with your audience the incredible details about a generation of people, mostly women, who have gotten addicted to severely cutting themselves as a cry for help and for temporary relief from nearly unbearable feelings of frustration, pain, helplessness and numbness from a world they see as foreign to their parallel inner world.

In addition to discussing Cutters, Nancy addresses a myriad of other life-controlling issues that are threatening the lives of thousands of young people every day.

Nancy offers practical advice and emotional and spiritual insight for those either struggling with or seeking to help others with these debilitating issues.

By interviewing Nancy Alcorn, you are offering freedom for many imprisoned in a world of self-harm, from which they see no inside exit door. You also are performing a public service, allowing the warning signs of self harm to be broadcast to those who may know someone exhibiting such behavior, to get them help. By interviewing Nancy Alcorn, you may be saving a life.

After working for the state, Nancy was appointed Director of Women for Nashville Teen Challenge where she worked for two years. Through her experience, she began to realize that only a spiritual transformation could bring restoration into the lives of these girls who were so desperately hurting and searching for something to fill the void they felt in their hearts, and she knew God was revealing a destiny that would result in her stepping out to do something about it.

In January 1983, determined to establish a program in which lives would truly be transformed, Nancy moved to Monroe, Louisiana to start Mercy Ministries of America. After much prayer, Nancy took a step of faith to do three specific things, all of which cut contrary to traditional wisdom for “success.”

(1) not to take any state or federal funding that may limit the freedom to teach spiritual principles, (2) to accept girls free of charge, and (3) to always give at least ten percent of all Mercy Ministries' donations to other charitable organizations and ministries.

Was this a Recipe for success or failure?

As time went on, Nancy’s vision, birthed in prayer, stayed faithful to these three principles, and God provided every need of the ministry just as He promised, not only to help with the launch of the ministry, but also for tremendous growth.

In Monroe, Nancy began with a small facility for troubled girls, and after adding on twice to make additional space in the original home, Nancy began to see the need for an additional home to meet the special needs of unwed mothers. In order for this dream to be realized on a debt-free basis, Nancy knew that funds would also need to be raised for this effort. She had faith that God was preparing His divine plan to make this a reality.

One day, Nancy, exhausted from speaking at a conference in Las Vegas, boarded a plane for home. A man sitting next to her seemed ready for a chat. Assuming she had come to Vegas to gamble, he casually asked her how much money she had lost. Much to his surprise, Nancy told him that she was not there to gamble at all, but rather for a different purpose, and shared with him the vision about Mercy Ministries. He seemed interested and Nancy gave him one of the remaining brochures she had with her as they parted.

A Pivotal Phone Call…

About four weeks later, this same man called Nancy to ask her for more details about Mercy Ministries and said he felt compelled to help in some way. It was then that Nancy told him about the plans for the unwed mothers' home. He shared with her that he had been adopted when he was five days old. His heart was so touched that he wrote a check to Mercy Ministries for $150,000.00 to help build the second Mercy Ministries house debt free!

Several years and many miracles later, Mercy Ministries has homes in Monroe, LA, Nashville, TN, and St. Louis, MO. The ministry has also expanded internationally into Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zealand and Peru, with plans for ever greater growth.

According to Nancy, "Through experience, we have learned that God has called us to heal the broken hearted; it is our belief that if we provide places free-of-charge where girls can come and receive new life… as well as professional training in other areas, their lives will never be the same!"

“Cut” will help you learn recognize the signs and symptoms of self-harm, understand how and why these behaviors develop, and know how to break free and stay free. Read stories of girls just like you, who once had no hope, now live with joy and freedom. There’s also a section for parents and others who care. There is mercy for self-harm!
